9th Grader Matthews Takes State Diving Title
The best diver in New York State is an eighth grader from Williamsville North. Casey Matthews proved that by winning the title at the 29th annual New York State Swimming and Diving Championships on Long Island, Saturday November 20, 2004. Casey has been diving with the Spartans since seventh grade and has participated in state competition for three consecutive years. She placed 6th at the State Meet in 2002, 3rd at the State Meet in 2003 and was undefeated in all competition in 2004: 9-0 in dual meets, ECIC Champion, Section 6 Champion and State Diving Champion. Her 484.20 total at the State Meet set the Williamsville North School record. Casey was awarded the Most Valuable Athlete award for the Spartans this year. In summer competition in 2004 (US Diving), she took 1st place at Nationals in 3M diving for her age group. Casey who is also a Scholar Athlete, is coached by Doug Cassidy.
ORCHARD PARK WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP 200 M RELAY

The Orchard Park 200 medley relay team placed first in this event for the second year in a row. The Quakers' foursome of junior Andrea Lehner, 8th grader Maddie Sherry, sophomore Hannah Whistler and junior Megan Smith swam an automatic All-American time of 1:49.24
First State Title Won by Lancaster Girls Volleyball
The Lancaster Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team clinched their first State Championship this year by beating the defending State Champions from Ward-Melville HS (Section XI). They were crowned the Class AA State Champions after 3 previous years of coming home with the 2nd place plaque. The forth time was a charm for the 6 seniors that lead this year’s team to an undefeated season with a 23-0 record. The seniors included Stephanie Jansma, who will continue her volleyball career at UNC-Chapel Hill on a full scholarship. Kristine O’Hara, Meghan Fitzsimmons, and Val Grell are deciding on which college to play for. Lacey Severins has signed to play softball at the University of Dayton and Amanda Blando will attend Ohio State. The underclassmen include Juniors: Amanda Dux, Kelly Jablonski, and Sara Russ. The three sophomores are Danielle Martzolf, Kristi Schrantz and Lindsey Schlegel.
This year’s team, which is coached by Sue Pernick, also achieved academic recognition as a Scholar Athlete Team that posted a team high average of 96.07.
Boys Volleyball Teams Tops in the State
Both Class A
Hamburg and Class B Eden were victorious at the 2004 Boys Volleyball intersectional competition in Section 3.The Hamburg Boys volleyball faced off against McQuaid Jesuit of Rochester in the Class A State Regional Championships. The scores of the game were 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17. This was Hamburg’s first State Intersectional title for the boys volleyball program. During the State tournament the Bulldogs went 5-1 in pool play by beating Burnt Hills (Albany) 25-22, 25-16, Central Square (Syracuse) 25-28, 25-12, and McQuaid (Rochester) 25-18, 22-25.
After starting the season 0-2, Hamburg finished on a 21 game winning streak with an overwhelming 30-3. The team, coached by Brian Carroll, won the 16-team Eden tournament, competing against teams from all over NY State, the Orchard Park tournament, and the Sweet Home Tournament. This is the most successful volleyball team Hamburg has had in its schools history.

The 2004 Eden Raiders captured the NYS Intersectional Class B Championship by defeating
Victor W 25-15, 25-15, and 25-10. They claimed the Section VI B Championship by defeating E. Aurora W – 25-17, 25-10, and 25-15. The team, coached by Robert Pierce had an Overall Record of 26-3, a Division Record of 12-0 and were Div III Champs 12-0.
