Williamsville East claims Division II State Championship

The Williamsville East Flames Hockey TEAM won the first ever State Championship in the schools history. The team worked through many obstacles throughout the season. The team’s biggest game of the season was one late in the year versus cross-town rival Williamsville South. A win would advance the Flames to the Regionals. They did with a 3-2 effort and a great game by both teams.

The regional game vs. Section IV Solvay featured two of the leading scorers in the state on the Bearcats; East played well and defeated them 5-1 to advance to Utica and the final "4". The team again put in a great effort only letting in 1 goal for a 3-1 victory over Glen Falls of Section 2.

The stage was set for the championship game #2 Williamsville East vs #1 Salmon River. The Flames took an early 1-0 after the first…Both teams scored in the second to give a one goal lead for the Flames going into the final period. Salmon tied the game at 2 early in the 3^rd period. Williamsville East had great pressure in the closing minutes but the Salmon River goalie made many great saves to send the game to overtime. Williamsville East came out flying and Alex Durinka (tourney MVP) scored on a great feed from Matt McGlone (All tourney team) to send Williamsville to its first State Championship.
