FALL SPORTS CHAMPIONS 2000 |
NYSPHSAA has announced that Section VI had three State Scholar Athlete Champions in fall sports! Iroquois Central High School Football Team - GPA 95.856
Springville Griffith Institute Boys Soccer Team - GPA 95.523
Sweet Home Central High School Girls Volleyball Team - GPA 96.159.
The 2000 Iroquois Varsity Football Team proved this season that they could not only perform on the field but also in the classroom. The Chiefs won the "A" Bowl Championship and finished with a record of 7 – 3 while breaking 30 school records! Equally impressive was the team’s accomplishment in the classroom. Twenty members of the 38 – man roster had a 90 or above average and the top 12 had a State-high GPA of 95.856 (1st out of 132 schools)! The 2000 Football season truly was successful, both on the field and in the classroom!
Springville-Griffith Institute Boys Varsity Soccer 2000
Improving considerably over the past four seasons, the Springville-G.I. Boys Varsity Soccer team finished the 2000 season with an overall record of 9 wins to 9 losses and a division record of 5 wins to 7 losses, missing a playoff berth by one victory. However, this disappointment was somewhat tempered by the honor of being named the NYSPHSAA State Champion Scholar Athletes! This award is a direct result of a total team commitment to academic achievement, shown by the winning average of 95.52 for the top twelve players and an overall team average of 89.04. In all, fourteen players earned scholar-athlete honors and the team is proud to have a banner to display in our gymnasium! Essential to the team success was a strong positive attitude in both winning and losing games; no matter the score, this team worked together and encouraged each other to do their personal best. Led by captains (honor students) Shawn Parker (96.44 average, eight goals and five assists) and Greg Salzler (98.14 average, two goals and one assist), this team placed equal emphasis on game and academic performance. Eleven out of the top fourteen academics were starters or important reserves including All-WNY Second Team All-Stars Paul Goodrich and Adam Phillips, also honorable mentions Salzler, Parker and goalkeeper Chris Giroux. They are a great bunch of guys and I was pleased with their behavior, both on and off the field. Many of the opposing coaches and referees commented on the clean and consistent effort the team exhibited; they are to be commended for their honor and their commitment to the team, to the game and to their education.
2000 Sweet Home Girls Volleyball team

At the 2000 NYSPHSAA Girls Volleyball Tournament at SUNY at Stonybrook, Sweet Home defeated North Rockland from Section I three straight times. Unfortunately the Lady Panthers lost to the same team three times in a row to narrowly lose the state title.
The State Tournament is a familiar place for Sweet Home. From 1990-1995, the Lady Panthers won the first six state titles given. To advance to the states this year, Sweet Home stormed to three-game sweeps in the Section VI Championship over Lancaster at Buffalo State College and in the Far West Regionals over Canandaigua at Geneseo State. Including tournament play, the Lady Panthers finished the season 37-3 and with the No. 1 ranking in the Buffalo News Large School Coaches Poll.
To its many athletic accomplishments, this teams adds the highly coveted academic award of State Scholar Athlete Champion. With eleven team members averaging 96.159, the Girls Volleyball team proved they are tough competitors in the classroom as well as on the court!
The team was coached by Kathy Neelon.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THREE SCHOOLS!
