Pioneer Field Hockey Players Top Scholar/Athletes

The say lightning never strikes the same place twice, but the way things are going for Pioneer student athletes, it could be the start of an electrifying era.

On the heels of last spring's State Scholar/Athlete Award for the Pioneer Golf Team, The Panther's Field Hockey Team has won the fall 2001 State Scholar/Athlete honor, with a scholastic average of 95.602.

"This is an honor that can be truly shared by the athletes, their parents, their teachers and anyone who has contact with them since they started school," said Coach Jana Landahl. "These kids are bright, fun, hard-working and easy to coach."

Pioneer's golf team was tops in the state last spring with a cumulative average of 96.980, marking the first time a team from Pioneer received this statewide honor. This fall the Lady Panthers competed against 135 other teams and over 1600 fellow field hockey players. In field hockey, the top 12 players have their un-weighted scholastic averages considered for this award. The selected Pioneer players were Rachel George, Misty Waite, Amanda Glasner, Kristina Raab, Erica Colwell, Sandra Cook, Emily Kandel, Amy Neamon, Coty Reisdorf, Danielle Zink, Lissa Landahl, and Kelsey Landahl.

Not only are these students winners in the classroom, but they had a very successful season on the field. Their record was 11-4 including a 7-1 mark in league play. The y were ECIC Division II co-champions, with 7 players selected to various all-star teams. Lissa Landahl became Pioneer's second 1st team all WNY athlete in Field Hockey. "One of the most important aspects is that through athletics, we are helping to mold well-rounded individuals" said Mrs. Landahl. "The combination of competition and good academics helps to breed excellence."

"Winning this award last spring was very gratifying" said Pioneer Athletic Director Jim Graczyk. "It set the standard. This fall's field hockey team accepted the challenge and kept the tradition going.
